Effective July 1, 2015, Tennessee drivers caught driving without the proper insurance face an increased fine of $300, originally $100. From January 1, 2016 and onwards, police officers could have your car towed on the spot if you don’t have proof of insurance. From now until January 1, 2017, the state of TN will work on getting a new online insurance verification program. The system is designed to track down drivers who have not purchased valid insurance through their vehicle registration information. Vehicle owners without insurance will not be able to renew their vehicle's registration.
