As of July 1, 2015, driving uninsured in Tennessee became costlier, with the fine for driving without the proper insurance increasing from $100 to $300. From January 1, 2016 and onwards, police officers could have your auto immediately towed if proof of valid insurance is not produced. From now until January 1, 2017, Tennessee will be working on creating and implementing an online insurance verification program. Once implemented, the program will find uninsured drivers by accessing vehicle registration records. Vehicles that are owned by uninsured drivers will be ineligible for renewal.
